I joined Amazon’s Device & Services Design Group in 2016, where I was instrumental in establishing the multimodal motion framework for Amazon Echo devices. This role required the development of scalable UX motion behaviors that effectively adapted to various device sizes, performance capabilities, and aspect ratios. During the early stages of product design, I developed motion studies to map user flows and quickly iterated on various design solutions. This helped clearly communicate our vision and direction to leadership, significantly enhancing team alignment and speeding up the design approval process for projects with very tight deadlines.
Echo Spot is an alarm clock sized Alexa voice-controlled device with a 2.5 inch diameter round screen and a built-in camera. This compact version of Echo Show was released in September 2017 and and was almost entirely conceptualized through motion studies before going to code. As the only motion designer working on this product, I designed an efficient motion framework that could be scaled across domains and helped solve a series of interaction problems unique to a small radial screen. The following video features my proposed solution for horizontal list scrolling that ultimately shipped on device.
The Echo Show is a smart display device developed by Amazon that combines the functionality of a voice-activated smart speaker with a visual screen. It features Amazon's voice assistant, Alexa, allowing users to interact through voice commands. The device can play music, display video content, show weather updates, manage smart home devices, make video calls, and provide information like recipes or news. As the lead motion designer for this product, I developed the multimodal motion framework and collaborated with the engineering team to ensure our design vision translated seamlessly onto the device.
Alexa Sunrise is a feature on all Echo devices that gradually brightens the screen 15 minutes before your alarm goes off. I designed this feature and created a 45 second Lottie animation that was later programmatically remapped on device to cover a 15 minute time span.
